These people focus on what they perceive as the impossible. It was impossible to make a car that everyone could afford, until it was done. It was impossible for humans to fly, until it was done. It was impossible to travel faster than the speed of sound, until it was done. This year, we celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Lunar Landing. Up until that time, it was impossible to go to the moon, and return safely. But, in July of 1969, it was done. Moving from the impossible to the possible is tough. Happy President’s Day. On this Presidents’ Day holiday, it’s been traditional to celebrate the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. But this year, I’d like to take a quote from one of my favorite presidents, Calvin Coolidge, the 30th president of the United States. President Coolidge, also known as Silent Cal, was a conservative in the mode of Thomas Jefferson. Coolidge believed that in a free country that business and industry should be left alone as much as possible and allowed the free market to take its course with little oversight from the federal government. However, when President Coolidge did speak, he always said something very profound. President’s Weekend. We all have opinions. We all have our likes and dislikes; our biases pro or against; our ideas of what makes us happy or sad. Our Founders and Framers knew this and wanted to separate personal opinion from objective debate and thoughtful decision-making. So many of our political leaders have forgotten the words from the Declaration of Independence that state: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed, by their Creator, with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness.” The Founders knew that the future Government of the United States should not attempt to legislate that which is determined by individual passions and desires. You should be allowed to live your LIFE, enjoy your LIBERTY, and pursue those things that bring HAPPINESS to you and your family, provided that such pursuits do not infringe on the Life, Liberty, and Happiness of others. Yet, today, we engage in public debate and displays of support for programs and policies that limit life, liberty, and happiness. We do this because our debate on social issues is now dominated by passionate OPINION, rather than RATIONAL DISCOURSE.
